Taking part

Who are we looking for?

(1)    Children who are being brought up with English from birth and who later come into (regular) contact with Dutch.

Here are some examples of children who would fall into this category:
  • a child who arrived from an English-speaking country age 8 and then went to a Dutch-speaking school
  • a child who was born in the Netherlands to English-speaking parents and who started attending an international school where Dutch classes are part of the curriculum at age 4
  • a child who was born in the Netherlands to English-speaking parents and attended a (partly) Dutch-speaking daycare from age 2.
(2)    Children who are being brought up with English and Dutch from birth.  Children in this category are typically spoken to in English by one parent and Dutch by another.

In both groups, children should currently be aged 0 – 15

Not sure whether your child would be suitable? Please mail us at ecb@childbilingualism.org with your details and we’ll let you know.

What is involved?

  • Taking part in various language games in English and in Dutch
  • Between 1 and 3 short sessions
  • At school and/or at home --- we endeavour to test children in the environment in which they usually speak the language in question. For most children, this will mean at home for English and at home or at school for Dutch.
  • Completing a questionnaire to help us interpret your child's data (via email, telephone or face to face with one of our research assistants)
  • At a time and place that is convenient for you!

Please note that our principal investigator is currently on leave. If you sign up to participate in our project, or if you send us an e-mail, we will respond to you by e-mail in October.
